Health Services

The Blount County Schools Health Services Department is responsible for school nurse coordination and training that includes:

  • Staff CPR and first aid instruction;

  • Medical emergency management;

  • 504 and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings for students with health care needs, and;

  • Teaching students to be as healthy as possible.

School nurses are charged with taking care of students who have medical needs, injuries and/or illnesses at school. Additionally, they are often involved in referral decisions for students, and assist with health screenings every year.

Each BCS school has a nurse present on most days. BCS elementary schools employ Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), who are supervised by a Registered Nurse (RN) that works at the nearest middle school facility. At the high school level, each building has an RN an LPN. The district also employs LPNs who specifically work in special education classrooms as teacher’s assistants/nurses.
